How to Choose the Right Gift for Anyone at Any Time
Taking the time to search for that perfect gift can seem overwhelming, especially when you have no idea where to begin. We hear that, there’s just so much going on in everyone’s lives.
Fear not, we are going to make the gift finding process easier for you. Start with gathering basic information of the person you’re gifting to.
Once you answer these basic questions or jot down notes, you’ll be able to take a closer look at what type of gift sticks out as the obvious choice.
Think about personality traits.
Is the person you’re looking for a no-fuss and frills type of person? Forgetful? Perhaps they are energetic and up for anything or low-key and like a slow pace. Keep these traits in the back of your mind as you go through gift ideas, which will help cancel out gifts that just don’t fit.
For instance, if you want to get an organizational planner for the forgetful person in your life, and they are more serious, you may want to stick to classic, neutral colors, vs. a zany wild print.
With any gift, ask: do you see them using this gift? Based on some personality traits you’ve identified, you should be able to say “yes” or “no” and start narrowing your choices down.
Hone in on specific hobbies and interests.
This seems like a given but it’s sometimes better to reframe “hobbies and interests” as “what makes the person you're giving a present to happy?” Do they love hiking? Well, get some rad hiking boots, a quality hydration thermos, some clothing gear or other handy hiking tools. What about the foodie in your life? Seek out a variety pack of hot sauces or barbecue sauces sets for them to try. If they love cooking too, get them amazing truffle oils or special salts from around the world with recipes to try out. Asking this question will help you focus on specific activities they like, and in turn come up with some cool ideas that make that activity even more enjoyable.
Don’t get the first thing that comes to mind for gift ideas.
So there’s a milestone like a Graduation, new baby, home or an upcoming trip you want to gift a useful item for.
Think of the first thing you would want for any of those occasions. Now, think of the second, third and fourth thing you would need. Chances are they will get the first and second thing that comes to mind from other friends and family members or have bought it themselves. Zero in on those third+ choices to get that out-of-the box thinking gift, and have them say, “I didn’t even think to get this for myself!”
On the flip side, what do they need right now?
If someone’s sick, think about what you would want right then. Send a soup care package, reading material, a grab bag of medicine or easy-to-do activities like puzzles, coloring books etc. What about someone moving into their new home? Have lunch or dinner delivered for the whole family, or fun snacks to eat while they unpack. Maybe send basic cleaning supplies in a new laundry basket so they don’t have to run to the store for these easy to forget items. Sometimes a convenient gift is so much more appreciated!
Give from the heart.
When it comes down to it, anything you gift will be appreciated because you took the time to show that you care. Don’t stress it and overthink it too much! If you are still in a bind, you can always just shop our easy categories at The Choosy Gifter too! ;)
