Gifting During Tough Times

The year of 2020 has been a difficult one for many households and families. Covid-19 has affected the world, keeping loved ones away from one another as we navigate new safeguards for society. Many have lost their jobs, income and loved ones. Add to that the political climate, a U.S. election year and everything is changing, unsure of what tomorrow will hold.

As we approach the holidays, we know they will be different for everyone. Gifting may be a luxury for families this year. I wanted to offer first my support and love to you and yours, and also different options for gifting this year as we navigate these tough times together.

Gift Option #1
Set a one gift per person rule. This takes off immense pressure and funds of gifting multiple items. You can set a standard of up to a certain dollar amount too. Having rules that work for your family communicates what you are able to manage, without feelings getting hurt and money being an issue. People will appreciate the gesture of any gift you can spare, no matter how big or small.

Gift Option #2
Don’t exchange any gifts, except for one gift for each child. Bring food, drinks and goodies to munch on during any safe, small gathering and share in that cost. The ability to be in one house safely and enjoy company in person is enough this season. Indulge in great food, drinks and company, while the kids play with their new items.

Gift Option #3
Pick out one easy gift that EVERYONE gets. Choose fun holiday or fuzzy socks, one matching each person’s personality or favorite color. Maybe a festive mug that you can decorate or have personalized ahead of time. Or fun pajamas, a zany t-shirt, popcorn tin, Hogwarts house sweaters, whatever you feel your family can enjoy the most together. You can choose different designs for each person no matter what you pick out, so everyone can show them off.

Gift Option #4

Maybe your friends and family can’t see one another at all OR spend any money on gifts. Be each other’s company over Zoom/Skype/Facetime etc as a gift. Plan a time to meet up where you can all toast to the holidays and each other and catch up. Maybe even squeeze in a game or activity you can play together. If video chats aren’t an option, simply spend time with your household any way you can. Create a feast and smorgasbord of excellent goodies to enjoy all day. Then, pop in a movie, two or three, play board games, and simply enjoy being with your family in your little bubble. Any time to just be in the moment and be with one another is more than enough this holiday.

Gift Option #5
If you can spare, gift a donation to a charity of your choice, in the person or family’s name. We have been gifted this in the past and have always enjoyed the thoughtfulness of this, while building up our community where we can. If you can only spend a little, this gesture can go a long way, and the gift recipients understand and appreciate this sweet sentiment.

However you choose to gift and spend the holidays this year, we hope that you and your loved ones can enjoy the season any way you can. Happy Holidays to all!
